Discounted bike loans for York cyclists

My cycling blogs are the most popular postings I do on here (which is surprising since it's meant to be about PR and news) so here's another one.

Cycling City York have teamed up with North Yorkshire Credit Union and local cycle retailers to provide affordable, low interest loans and a special discount to those who'd like a bike but can't find the spare cash.

Each loan will cover the cost of buying a suitable bike from a reputable, local retailer, along with a good lock and a set of lights. Participating retailers are offering a six per cent discount to those buying a bike through the scheme.

I really like this idea and I'm sure it's going to be successful.

You can read more of the scheme here.

For more information and an application form, contact North Yorkshire Credit Union on 01904 676633, or visit North Yorkshire Credit Union at  or Cycling City York.

Congratulations to filmmaker Steve Nesbit

The work of Steve Nesbit deserves a wider audience - he's a filmmaker who is based in North Yorkshire.

He's just finished his second thriller which is set here. Though we may not be a metropolis we do have a wide range of skilled TV and filmmakers here. (I must point out that we have worked for a York-based TV production firm before and done some really good work. However, we now team up with Chromavision in Halifax but we are always interested in hearing from other local production companies).

Steve has shown his work at Cannes and had a good reception. His latest film, Curio, was made near to where I live.

We should be proud of his endeavours - good luck Steve with your next venture.

Blitz on problem cyclists in York city centre

As a cyclist I love riding around the centre of York and I support, to some degree, the proposed crackdown.
There's no excusing the clowns who ride down Coney Street on a Saturday afternoon expecting pedestrians to move out of the way.

However, I do confess to riding through the streets very early in a morning (and on a weekend it's surprising how many tourist groups are on guided trips).

This story on the problem in the York Press is pretty good but the 'crack down' needs to be carried out throughout the year.

And let's not just focus on the chav element - last Saturday two women middle-aged women on nice bikes who should know better did the pelting along Coney Street without a care-in-the-world routine and it made me mad.

To make matters worse they cycled past what looked like a police officer in cycle gear - who did absolutely nothing.

Clifford's Tower in York - the only photo opp?

Can someone explain to me why it appears that the only PR photo opp in York is in front of Clifford's Tower? Is it really the only recognisable landmark in this city?

Every week The Press will carry a story with the tower behind the subjects of the photograph. It's also, generally, the same set-up. Is it the same photographer doing this?

This is the story in today's Press which has irked me. It's a nice tale about bus and taxi drivers brushing up on their knowledge of the city to impress visitors. I only hope they know of other photo opps other than Clifford's Tower.

Is Bridlington's marina plan sunk?

When I was reporting for Calendar News I used to cover the subject of Bridlington's bid for a marina on a regular basis.

To be honest I'm surprised that this application is still going.

Leaving aside the issues of cost and its immense size - who would actually use it?

This is how the Bridlington Free Press reports the latest:

PLANS for the £50 million marina for Bridlington could be under threat.

Government spending cuts, including the possible axing of regional development agency Yorkshire Forward, could hit the future of what has been described as a vital part of Bridlington's regeneration.

Coun Stephen Parnaby, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "We are still fully committed to Bridlington and know its importance in the region.

"As far as the marina is concerned we have to be realistic when schools, hospitals and other services are being hit throughout the country, but we are not giving up."

Is it 'us and them' between cyclists and buses in York?

I only ask because this morning illustrates an issue I've been having with buses in our city.

Cycling to the train station I detoured via Rougier Street (always a risk, I know) to find it was clogged with buses.

Anyway, at the end I slip between two but I'm forced onto the pavement but on jumping back into the road I hear a bang and check the pannier is still on.

It is...but only for a few seconds more.

It comes off by the lights and lands in the road. I stop and drag the bike back to see a single decker bus (it's a blue one so may have been the Coastliner) narrowly (and I mean by millimetres) miss the pannier.

I'm not very happy to see another bus round the corner but he stops to let me retrieve the bag. So thank you!

But the bag has a laptop computer in it - would they pay out if I made a claim for a bus having (what appeared to be deliberately) driven over it?

In most parts of York the bus drivers are considerate but in town it's like the Whacky Races some days!

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Congratulations on the Dalesman cover!

A friend of Urban Media is Steve Lord - a talented lighting cameraman with whom we have worked on TV commissions.

And, from this image, he is also a talented photographer. So good that we are planning to use some of his images on our own site! This cover of The Dalesman (we have also done some work with them in the past!!) looks really good. Eye-catching and impressive.

We have also gained Steve some publicity in the Halifax Courier after he made a major investment in his equipment.

Inflatable greenhouse gets a ‘green’ thumbs-up!

We went to visit the GreenSafe stand at the Harrogate Spring Flower Show last Friday and we were very impressed. The greenhouses looked fantastic and GreenSafe directors Daniel and Michael were there offering information.

Lots of people were stopping and asking lots of questions - the lads were rushed off their feet! It was good to see too that they made a number of sales during the event. In the coming days we will probably paste some photos here that we took there.

Here's part of the Press Release we have distributed today:

Visitors to the popular Harrogate Spring Flower Show gave a resounding ‘thumbs-up’ to a new product which is attracting lots of attention.

The green-fingered fans thought that the GreenSafe portable greenhouse was a very impressive product.

Daniel Newbould is a Director of the Leeds firm which is distributing the greenhouse and he said: “The reaction we got was just incredible. Everyone thought the GreenSafe was a great product.

“We had lots of inquiries and we took a lot of orders. The Show’s visitors were all impressed by the quality and ease-of-use of the GreenSafe. One of the most popular questions we were asked was: Why hasn’t something like this been invented before?”

If you would like a fresh approach to dealing with the media, then please contact us and find out what we can do for you.

Golfers can win a £25,000 car!

We think this is a great idea for a competition - all you have to do is land a hole-in-one and win the keys to a £25,000 Merecedes-Benz!

Sadly, we don't have those skills here (despite being asked to go on many golfing days!) but we wish the organisers all the best because they are raising money for a worthy local cause.

Here is the Press Release:

Golfers can putt their skills to good use to win a car

Keen golfers and non-golfers alike are challenged to produce the drive of their life to get the drive of their life in a novel competition, which will see someone win a brand new Mercedes-Benz worth £25,000.
Organised by the Golftorium, the UK's biggest indoor golf centre, the competition is open to anyone who feels they have what it takes to land a hole-in-one.
The qualifying period takes place between 1 and 15 May, to make the final cut on 22 May. Entry for the qualification is free and participants will be pitching their way to winning the Mercedes-Benz by pitting their skills against the 7th hole at Pebble Beech, which has a famous 100 yard approach to the pin.
To progress to the final, golfers will need to land their chip nearest the pin to make the cut. The 100 finalists will then have the tougher obstacle of landing a hole-in-one at the 14th hole at Harbour Town, which is a highlight of the PGA tour.
The first lucky driver to complete this challenge will pick up the keys to their new vehicle, courtesy of Mercedes-Benz Central.
"We are already getting a lot of interest in the competition and while the first shot is free, extra shots will have a small charge,” said Manchester's Golftorium director, Craig Woodward.  “All the money raised is going to a good cause; we are donating the money to a newly formed local charity called HAWCS, the Habitat and Wildlife Conservation Society.
“This is a great opportunity for golfers of any standard to come along and pitch themselves against the competition. Getting a hole-in-one isn't just about skill, there's a great deal of luck involved so it’s anyone’s game!”
Craig added: “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate an achievement like this than driving off in a new Mercedes Benz.  It's a fantastic competition offering the change to win a brilliant prize, have some fun and help charity at the same time."
More details can be found at www.golftorium.com or call the centre on 0161 228 0681.

Innovative portable greenhouse is launched

The GreenSafe portable greenhouse has now been launched nationwide. Hopefully, you will be reading more about this impressive product over the coming weeks. We've also been talking to a major TV show about getting it on but they are off for the summer now. They are still keen to get the GreenSafe down when they are back on air though.

A portable greenhouse which is set to revolutionise gardening has been launched.
The GreenSafe can be erected for just part of a year and is easily moved to suit a gardener's requirements.
Daniel Newbould, a director of GreenSafe International which distributes the greenhouse, said: "This is a fantastic product and we are bringing it to the UK and Ireland for the first time.
“There are already more than 10,000 happy customers across Europe and we believe that thousands more here will join them.”
With a recent study revealing that 72 per cent of greenhouse owners admitting to not using their greenhouse for more than six months of every year, Daniel believes there is a vast untapped market.
He said: “So many people have a greenhouse they rarely use that it’s a waste of valuable space!"

For more information on the GreenSafe, visit www.thegreensafe.co.uk or read the rest pf the release at the Urban Media site.

York cyclists offered Twitter updates

One of the reasons I enjoy living and working in York is that I cycle just about everywhere.

Normally, it's a very safe thing to do - we don't have that many idiot drivers coming too close to us or ignoring us.

So I'm really on board with this initiative.

AN INTERNET campaign has been launched to promote cycling in one of Yorkshire's most congested cities and help prevent traffic tailbacks.

Officials behind the Cycling City York project have set up Facebook and Twitter online profiles to provide regular updates about events and activities.

Cyclists who sign up will then be sent alerts giving them latest information about the York scheme.

Sadly there are no links in the story and the Council website is not much better.

So, despite the PR 'experts' not putting the links in, you can follow @CyclingCityYork on Twitter. I'm the third person to 'follow'!

Yorkshire fans to get a better definition of the county

A HALIFAX-based TV firm has made a major investment in HD cameras to boost its service to clients.
The firm also makes a very popular series about Yorkshire tourist attractions and is set to revolutionise the DVD market.
Steve Lord, a director of Chromavision, said: “We have made the investment in HD cameras to offer something very few other media companies do.
“In addition, we start production this summer of another in our series of Picture Postcard Yorkshire which sell around the world."

Public relations for social enterprises

Here at Urban Media PR we have toyed with creating a public relations service aimed squarely at Social Enterprise - because these organisations are something we strongly believe in.

We are proud to be associated with one of the country's leading social enterprises in the shape of CASAC. They do fantastic work in combating crime in West Yorkshire. Indeed, they should be held up as a prime example of the good that Social Enterprises can do.

The story below is from Social Enterprise magazine and it resonates with me. I think the figure for such businesses is far higher than most people assume.

Study increases number of UK social enterprises to 232,000 from 62,000.

The UK could be home to 232,000 social enterprises and not the official figure of 62,000, new research shows.

A study by economics consultancy Delta Economics and market researchers IFF Research revealed that a fifth of 2,121 entrepreneurs interviewed run businesses that could be ‘hidden social enterprises'. These are classed as for-profit companies with a social, environmental or job creation purposes and reinvest their profits or surpluses to achieve this goal. Those asked have been running their business for more than two years, but fewer than ten have annual turnovers greater than £200,000.

Read the article

In essence, as Geof Cox comments on the site: 'you don't need to be structurally different from other businesses to be entirely ethical: to say MORE effectively 'this is the way EVERYONE should do business'.

Pay what you want to eat at the pub

This is a story we did on Steve and Gemma at The Fox in Stockton-on-the-Forest for The Publican. They are a lovely couple in a great pub and deserve the success they are working so hard for.

* If you have a news story - please contact us

Licensee gives customers the chance to decide how much a meal is worth

A pub has launched a menu with a difference by allowing customers to pay what they think a meal is worth.

Steve Howard took over Punch Taverns pub the Fox Inn at Stockton-on-the-Forest near York in January and wanted an unusual way to encourage customers back into the pub.

So every Wednesday diners are given the chance to pay what they like for their food.

He said: “So far this has worked really well. No-one can believe it. But one thing in our favour is the British inability to haggle.

“The first time we did it we had three people out of 25 who didn’t pay enough to cover the cost of the ingredients.

“And the lowest we’ve been offered for the rump steak was £5. Otherwise people have been very fair and offer close, or sometimes, more than what the dish would normally cost.”

Steve’s girlfriend Gemma Esders, 25, added: “It has certainly got people talking and we are seeing more people come through the door as a result.”

The couple run the special menu every Wednesday from 12-6pm and some of the regulars are ‘threatening’ to pay just £1 for the sirloin steak.

Steve prepares all of the food himself from fresh ingredients and Wednesday’s menu includes sirloin steak, mixed grill, steak and ale pie, game pie, chicken and mushroom pie, scampi, burgers, penne arrabiata, stroganoff, gammon and hunter’s chicken.

Steve said: “The pub has had seven or eight licensees over the last two or three years. This offer means people will come along, see we do decent food and give us a chance.

“From my experience I think other pubs should give this a go and see what happens.”

Conference firms need to target Generation Y

One of the UK’s leading business coaches will take to the stage and tell firms that organise conferences what they should be doing to target Generation Y.
That’s typically the age of people born between the late 1970’s to mid 1990’s and a major conference is being held in Leeds for firms and organisation tasked with creating conferences for a new generation with higher expectations and skills wanting to attend such gatherings.
Stuart Powell will be staging a seminar and he said: “I’m really excited to be involved with this conference. It is absolutely vital for the future of the conference industry that it responds to the demands of Generation Y.
“To help them do that, I will be integrating thought-provoking and topical strategies into my seminar to show those attending what they should be doing to achieve success.”

A day out in Whitby

I guess this falls under the guidelines for this blog - though it takes place on the Yorkshire coast.

I love Whitby and have a real affection for Robin Hood's bay.

On Sunday we drove to Whitby and parked up on West Cliff. The parking ticket machine wasn't working but that didn't upset me.

We walked into the main part of the town to catch a bus to RHB. There's no indication on the stands of which bus is heading where.

You have to check out each timetable. Now that is a faff when you are in a rush. But we weren't so I wasn't that bothered.

However, I was bothered to find that a 20 minute bus journey for two adults and two children was going to cost me £10 - and that was the special day pass rate!

So thank you Arriva for fleecing visitors to the area. To be fair, the bus driver handled it really well and thought the price was ridiculous as well.

After a picnic we headed back to Whitby on the old railway line. In its glory days it must have been a fantastic trip. It still is - apart from ending when you reach the main coast road.

So we took a right turn and headed for Whitby Abbey. A really nice stroll and from there it was to the Magpie Cafe.

Now I am something of a fish 'n' chip aficionado so I know something of this subject. We've had a meal in the restaurant before and not been particularly impressed.

It doesn't compare to the Royale (or Fuscoe's to the locals) on Baxtergate, nor to Trenchers or even the Quayside restaurant.

But people still queue there.

We tried the takeaway - which still had a queue. So you would hope for a decent meal.

Apart from the queue I was staggered to see people waiting in line for quality fish and chips only to buy battered sausage! Or buy a fish and smother it in curry sauce!

Is it me? Why queue for ages at a takeaway with such a grand reputation and not try the fish?

The Magpie was excellent when it first opened. I was one of its first customers and enjoyed it there. Now though it looks like they are trading on their (hard earned) reputation but who can blame them?

Enjoy Whitby. It still has a charm of its very own, lots to see and do but do try and give the other restaurants a chance.

Tips on other decent food outlets in Whitby gratefully received! Please leave a comment below.

(By the way, I haven't had a bad meal in any of the eating places in Robin Hood's Bay and can particularly recommend the chippy up the side street and the pub at the bottom of the hill).

The Shambles named UK's 'most picturesque'

It's a street I go down often just for the 'vibe'.

It's cobbles date from the Middle Ages and are often rammed with visitors taking photos of the close-built buildings.

And now The Shambles has been voted Britain's most picturesque street in the Google Street View Awards.

I've even thought about getting one of the offices there - a modern business amongst the history would be fantastic.

Bishy Road shops make their mark online

Good luck to everyone involved with bishyroad.net and like Andy Shrimpton says in the York Press 'there's more to York than Coney Street'.

To be fair there are some excellent shopping streets in the centre but Bishy Road does stand out because it's on the edge and is very popular.

I go there quite often and next week will be supporting the two pubs around the corner which have recently put 'For Sale' signs up.

Mind you, I'll be taking a Dutch mate who is slowly gearing up to British pub life and enjoying it! (Then after that I thought I'd take a look at the refurb'd Slip Inn).

So, apart from Cycle Heaven and the Swan you can enjoy: M and K’s butchers; Pextons, voted hardware shop of the year for the whole of the UK and hairdressers Glen And Julio’s who have also been British champions.

Get down there and support local businesses!

Tetleys - incredible but true

I can't be the only person to be left stunned by the decision to move the production of Tetleys away from Leeds?

As a Leeds lad it's incrdible that the brewery will close (I had a great tour round it once with a bunch of other journos) and I'm sorry for the people who work there.

However, I now live in York and have the delights of York Brewery to enjoy. I like all of their pubs.

In fact, I love a lot of microbrewery beers (Cropton among them) and help support their endeavours whenever I can!

Now I've done this blog I realise that I should try working as a PR for a brewery. Or two. I'll keep you posted.

UPDATE: I will be supporting the call to boycott Carlsberg and their products (because it won't be too difficult!).

News team celebrate hat-trick of industry awards

Congratulations to everyone at ITV Tyne Tees and Border involved with winning a clutch of awards at the Royal Television Society North East and Borders Awards.

I'm really pleased for them since some of my best/happiest moments in journalism were spent at Tyne Tees.

I was at Belassis and then Newcastle creating (what I think were) gems of television news.

Anyway, the team picked up Best News Programme for its tribute to Sir Bobby Robson, Philippa Tomson was named Best Presenter and Gregg Easteal won the Best Journalist award.

I used to cadge a lift with Gregg from York up to Belassis and he really deserves the recognition (though I haven't seen him on the national ITV news for some time).

The only blip on the horizon is the odd idea of having another organisation run the news gathering and broadcasting in the North East instead of Tyne Tees.

Hopefully none of the great workers there will be put out of work because that would be a great loss to TV but to the North East too.

Well done!

Welcome to the new blog!

I've been thinking about creating a blog for a long time. Like many people I've put it off and now I'm jumping in.

I'll be blogging about living and working in York, Yorkshire and offering up my thoughts on public relations (PR). I will also be updating the blog with what I'm up to.

That and updating Twitter (urbanmediapr!) as well.

That's the thing with social media - you spend so much time being social you don't really get chance to do the work needed.
