Discounted bike loans for York cyclists

My cycling blogs are the most popular postings I do on here (which is surprising since it's meant to be about PR and news) so here's another one.

Cycling City York have teamed up with North Yorkshire Credit Union and local cycle retailers to provide affordable, low interest loans and a special discount to those who'd like a bike but can't find the spare cash.

Each loan will cover the cost of buying a suitable bike from a reputable, local retailer, along with a good lock and a set of lights. Participating retailers are offering a six per cent discount to those buying a bike through the scheme.

I really like this idea and I'm sure it's going to be successful.

You can read more of the scheme here.

For more information and an application form, contact North Yorkshire Credit Union on 01904 676633, or visit North Yorkshire Credit Union at  or Cycling City York.

Congratulations to filmmaker Steve Nesbit

The work of Steve Nesbit deserves a wider audience - he's a filmmaker who is based in North Yorkshire.

He's just finished his second thriller which is set here. Though we may not be a metropolis we do have a wide range of skilled TV and filmmakers here. (I must point out that we have worked for a York-based TV production firm before and done some really good work. However, we now team up with Chromavision in Halifax but we are always interested in hearing from other local production companies).

Steve has shown his work at Cannes and had a good reception. His latest film, Curio, was made near to where I live.

We should be proud of his endeavours - good luck Steve with your next venture.

Blitz on problem cyclists in York city centre

As a cyclist I love riding around the centre of York and I support, to some degree, the proposed crackdown.
There's no excusing the clowns who ride down Coney Street on a Saturday afternoon expecting pedestrians to move out of the way.

However, I do confess to riding through the streets very early in a morning (and on a weekend it's surprising how many tourist groups are on guided trips).

This story on the problem in the York Press is pretty good but the 'crack down' needs to be carried out throughout the year.

And let's not just focus on the chav element - last Saturday two women middle-aged women on nice bikes who should know better did the pelting along Coney Street without a care-in-the-world routine and it made me mad.

To make matters worse they cycled past what looked like a police officer in cycle gear - who did absolutely nothing.

Clifford's Tower in York - the only photo opp?

Can someone explain to me why it appears that the only PR photo opp in York is in front of Clifford's Tower? Is it really the only recognisable landmark in this city?

Every week The Press will carry a story with the tower behind the subjects of the photograph. It's also, generally, the same set-up. Is it the same photographer doing this?

This is the story in today's Press which has irked me. It's a nice tale about bus and taxi drivers brushing up on their knowledge of the city to impress visitors. I only hope they know of other photo opps other than Clifford's Tower.
